What Does Gold Plated Mean?

Gold plated refers to a type of jewellery or other item that has a thin layer of gold applied to its surface. The base material of the item is typically made of a different metal, such as copper or brass.

The gold plating process involves electroplating a thin layer of gold onto the surface of the base metal. The thickness of the gold layer can vary, but it is typically quite thin, usually less than 0.5 microns.

Gold plated jewellery can have a similar appearance to solid gold jewellery, but it is typically much more affordable. However, because the layer of gold is thin, it can wear off over time with regular use and exposure to moisture or other environmental factors.

It's important to note that the term "gold plated" does not indicate the purity of the gold used in the plating process. The gold used in gold plated items can range in purity from 10 karat to 24 karat, with 24 karat gold being the purest.

What is Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may), is a type of jewellery that consists of a sterling silver base that is coated with a thick layer of gold plating. To be considered vermeil, the gold plating must be at least 2.5 microns thick and the base metal must be sterling silver.

How to Clean Gold Vermeil Jewellery?

Cleaning gold vermeil jewellery requires a gentle touch and some basic supplies. Here are the steps you can follow to clean your gold vermeil jewellery:

  1. Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe the jewellery and remove any surface dirt or dust.
  2. Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Be sure to use a gentle, non-abrasive soap.
  3. Place the jewellery in the bowl and let it soak for a few minutes. Do not use hot water or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the gold vermeil plating.
  4. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub the jewellery, paying special attention to any crevices or hard-to-reach areas.
  5. Rinse the jewellery thoroughly under running water to remove all soap residue.
  6. Pat dry with a soft, clean towel, and then let the jewellery air dry completely before wearing or storing it.
  7. To prevent tarnishing, store your gold vermeil jewellery in a cool, dry place, and avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, perfumes, or other chemicals.

Remember, gold vermeil jewellery is not as durable as solid gold, so it's important to be gentle when cleaning and caring for it.

How Long Does Gold Vermeil Last?

The lifespan of gold vermeil jewellery depends on several factors, including the thickness of the gold plating, how often the jewellery is worn and how it is cared for. Generally, gold vermeil jewellery can last anywhere from several months to a few years with proper care.

In general, gold vermeil jewellery is a more affordable alternative to solid gold jewellery, but it is not as durable or long-lasting. With proper care, however, gold vermeil jewellery can maintain its appearance and beauty for a considerable amount of time.
