Something to Note...
At Self & Others, we believe that the true power of crystals comes from your personal connection with them.
Rather than relying on lengthy descriptions of what a crystal can do, we encourage you to use your intuition when selecting which crystal you need. Very often the elaborate descriptions will likely leave you feeling more overwhelmed and confused than clarified!
By tuning into your intuition, you'll discover how the crystal can uniquely support you in your journey. Trust the process, listen to the energy it offers, and let it reveal its purpose to you — because the best healing comes from within.
If you need help on how to select crystals, you can follow our “How to Choose Crystals Guide”.
What is Rhodochrosite?
- Chemical Composition: Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral with the formula MnCO₃. It may also contain traces of iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc.
- Origin: Rhodochrosite was first discovered in Romania in 1813. It is also found in South Africa, China, Argentina and the Americas. Argentina has declared rhodochrosite as one of its national symbols.
- Crystal System and Habits: Rhodochrosite belongs to the trigonal crystal system and has a hexagonal scalenohedral crystal class. It forms rhombohedral and scalenohedral crystals and bladed, columnar, stalactitic, botryoidal, granular or massive habits.
- Crystal Family or Group: Rhodochrosite is a member of the carbonate mineral family, which includes calcite, dolomite, siderite and malachite. It forms a complete solid solution series with siderite (FeCO₃).
- Hardness and Durability: Rhodochrosite has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.5, which means it is relatively soft and can be scratched easily.
- Colour: Rhodochrosite has a rose-red to pink colour caused by the presence of manganese. It can also be shades of yellow, grey, brown or white. It is transparent to translucent and has a vitreous to pearly lustre. It may show banding or zoning of different colours.
Methods for Cleansing and Charging Rhodochrosite
- Water: Avoid rinsing rhodochrosite in water as it is a soft mineral that can be damaged by prolonged exposure to moisture.
- Moonlight: Place rhodochrosite under the full moonlight to cleanse and recharge its energy, allowing the moon’s gentle energy to amplify its heart-healing properties.
- Sunlight : Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, as it may fade rhodochrosite’s colour. Brief sunlight exposure is acceptable for charging.
- Selenite : Use a selenite plate to cleanse and charge rhodochrosite by placing it on the plate for several hours to refresh its loving energy.
- Visualisation : Hold rhodochrosite in your hands and visualise a soft pink or red light flowing through it, clearing away stagnant energy and infusing it with compassion and healing.
- Sound : Cleanse rhodochrosite using sound vibrations from a singing bowl or tuning fork. Let the sound waves pass through the stone to refresh its energy.
- Smoke Cleansing : Pass rhodochrosite through the smoke of sage, palo santo, or other cleansing herbs to purify and recharge its gentle energy.
- Storage and Protection : Store rhodochrosite in a soft cloth or pouch to prevent scratches and keep it away from prolonged exposure to sunlight or chemicals.
How to Use Rhodochrosite
- Meditation and Spiritual Work : Use rhodochrosite during meditation by holding it near your heart chakra or in your hands. Its energy promotes emotional healing, compassion, and self-love.
- Jewellery and Accessories : Due to its softness, rhodochrosite should be worn carefully, but tumbled stones can be carried to keep its nurturing energy close throughout the day.
- Home and Office : Place rhodochrosite in your home or workspace to promote emotional healing, harmony, and compassion. It is ideal for creating a peaceful, heart-centred environment.
- Crystal Grids : Use rhodochrosite in crystal grids focused on love, emotional healing, or forgiveness. Pair it with rose quartz or morganite for enhanced heart-healing energy.
- Elixir or Infused Water : Always use the indirect method when creating a rhodochrosite-infused elixir, as the stone’s softness and chemical composition make it unsuitable for direct contact with water.
